AMMxMAGIC: Introducing your AMM MAGIC Team

Every February and August the retail industry gathers in Las Vegas for the most inclusive fashion marketplace, MAGIC. It is here brands showcase its upcoming seasons for buyers and retailers to get a sneak peak at the latest apparel, footwear, accessories and manufacturing. MAGIC drives the business of fashion.

This year our AMM department sent a team of students to Sourcing @ MAGIC to be our department's brand ambassadors here at Cal Poly. Here is an interview of your AMM MAGIC Team from MAGIC this past February...

How was it preparing for the show, what did you girls experience?
Tyler: "It was such a great opportunity. We really started from the ground up: we didn't really have any real direction, supplies, or rule book to follow. We were kinda flying off the seeds of our pants and trying to make everything work. Trying to figure out what we had, what we can transport to Vegas because we were doing it all by ourselves. We did however have faculty support to direct us and overlook our process but it was really all student run. There were a lot of mistakes but a lot of lessons learned as well.
While you were at the show what kind of feed back were you girls getting from exhibitors, buyers, brands: did people come up to talk to you, did people not want to talk to you?
Marlen: A lot of times when people would first come up to our booth they thought we were manufacturers or retailers so we really had to explain to them we were promoting our students and our department. We wanted them to know we were there to really network for possible internships, for possible guest speakers for our department.
To follow that, were you able to get future speakers, future job and internship opportunities?
Marlen: Yes, prior to that as apart of our preparation we made a google doc to list different companies that we were interested in networking with to get their business cards and to hand out ours. Tyler created our business cards we were able to have for the show.

Aubrey: A lot of people were excited to meet us. We were able to gather a lot of future job and internship opportunities for our AMM students.

Tyler: The fact that we were students: most of the brands were represented by paid spokes people who were very impressed with what our department has invested our time from a company's stand point.
Collectively, now that its all done and over with what is the biggest lesson you girls took from this experience? Is there any advice you would give to your fellow AMM students who will be taking on this journey in the future?
Elvira: Best advice is to just plan ahead and be well prepared.

Marlen: A lot of communication amongst ourselves and between the faculty too because they did play an important role in this whole process as well. Communication is vital.

Aubrey: Definitely have fun with this experience! This experience is something you can take with you in your future careers. You meet a lot of industry people that can help you get to where you wanna be in your career. Put yourself out there and have fun!
