Designer Interviews:

Alex Yang -
AS: What was your overall inspiration for the collection?

A: Well one guy that inspired me was Jerry Lorenzo, he’s the Fear Of God designer. This year’s goal is making something people are actually wanting to wear for daily life and wanting to purchase.

AS: We know you’ve shown twice before—so what was really different about this year for you?

A: Uh, very different about this year—every year is different, because the first year I just really pushed myself while I was still in the learning process of figuring out patterns, how to sew, what the seams are, etc. The second year I partnered with someone else and was doing a little bit extra designing, which came out great, but the collection wasn’t exactly clothes people would wear in daily life. This year my goal is that you can see it’s very—not basic—but it’s clothes that you can wear in everyday life.

AS: How long did it take you to create your collection, versus others that you’ve done before?

A: It actually took me, like 3 months, 3-4 months.

AS: Any specific piece that’s like really special to you?

A: Uh, special pieces—the bright green coat made of denim. So, the first year I had made a pink jacket/coat very similar to this one, but to me I just wanted to push myself. This year I told myself I’m already graduated, I’m already working in the industry, I want to be professional, so it’s more like I want to see how I’ve grown—and I also want to find out what I don’t know.

AS: So, where are you working now?

A: I’m working for TukaTech (well-known in the industry as a fashion technology and software company headquartered in Commerce, CA.).

AS: So, what was your inspiration for the collection?

K: I was really influenced by fashion influencers on social media that are really current and popular right now—some of them I would say, like Kylie Jenner really inspired me with some of the pieces. But overall, I wanted to make my line look high-end but also make it modern for everyday wear.

AS: Why did you decide to design and produce for the fashion society this year?

K: Um, honestly I have never done this before, it was my first time doing the fashion show, and I have worked previously in the past with other fashion designers who make Quinceanera dresses, and I have been doing that for 3 years. I’ve always been behind the scenes and this time is like, my moment—I wanted to do something big this year!

AS: How long did it take you to create the collection, from design to production?

K: I want to say when it was the application process in December. So, I made my designs using [Adobe] Illustrator—I did that and then once I heard I was approved, the next day or that week I went into Los Angeles just and bought all my fabric!

AS: Any significant pieces that you really hold dear to heart or care most about?

K: Hmm, let’s see—I’d really have to say all of them!

AS: How about the one that took longest?

K: The one that actually took the longest—I actually thought my very last piece, the yellow maxi [dress] with the flowers attached to it, I thought that was going to take the longest, but really it was the second to last one. I really wanted to do like, a caged mermaid, so that actually took forever—it took me three days and I didn’t finish until 8:30 this morning!

AS: Where do you see yourself after Cal Poly?

K: After Cal Poly, I want to say hopefully—I want to go into pattern making, so hopefully I’ll be working with a company doing pattern making. If not, my end goal is really to be a product development manager.

Shivani Patel -
AS: So, what was your inspiration for the collection?

S: So, it was all like 90s and basketball jerseys and just like bold colors—primary colors—so that was my inspiration.

AS: Why did you decide to design and produce for the fashion society show? I know you said it was your first time!

S: Oh, well I’ve always wanted to design, because I’ve always just created designs on paper, but I really want to make them come to life!

AS: How long did it take you to create your collection?

S: It took me like 4 or 5 months I’d say

AS: When did you start the design process?

S: I’d say, I think it was back in September

AS: Any significant pieces that are more special to you than the others?

S: Umm, well I like the blue jersey that my last model was wearing, it’s kind of just—like it’s not straight-up sportswear, it’s like a dress, so I think I really like that one the most because of the design aspects to it.

AS: And where do you see yourself after graduating?

S: After graduating, I definitely see myself in the fashion industry—I really want to do design, but I’m also open to consulting; I’m really into either like business or creating things.

AS: Who or what inspires you most in the fashion industry?

S: I think musicians actually do—like music videos, whoever’s styling them—that always inspires me. I just see all this crazy clothing and I think that’s so cool!

AS: Where are you working now?

R: TukaTech! I’m liking it, it’s a really great company to work for—I’m actually flying out to Pakistan tomorrow for the second time, so that should be really interesting!

AS: Oh, how fun! So, what was your inspiration for the collection? I noticed it was like a rainbow.

R: So, actually the collection started out much different, I was planning to do my collection based off of succulents, but just because of the time and being busy, I just kind of decided that I’m going to work with what I have and keep the same silhouettes.

AS: How long have you been designing for the Fashion Society show? Or is this the first one?

R: Well I designed last year as well as this one!

AS: How long did it take you to create the entire collection?

R: So I didn’t really start sewing until maybe like, 2 months ago? Then I designed maybe like, a year ago.

AS: And who or what inspires you the most in fashion?

R: It’s kind of hard to say—because just like a lot of my inspiration doesn’t come from fashion directly—it might come from art, my surroundings, or anything like that. This collection, since I went to Pakistan while in the middle of creating it, I definitely wanted to incorporate a lot of the color elements that you see there and just a lot of trims and stuff like that
